Visit La Crescent
La Crescent is a community of about 5,000 people which has much to offer to residents and visitors. Bordered on the east by the Mississippi River and on the west by the beautiful bluffs, this area is truly a wonderland with many opportunities. The nearby orchards remind us of our heritage, especially in the spring when the apple blossoms are in bloom and or in the Fall with the multitude of colors. La Crescent is fortunate to be home to three designated scenic drives, Apple Blossom Scenic Drive, Historic Bluff Country National Scenic Byway and the Great River Road.

Apple Blossom Scenic Drive
Apple Blossom Scenic Drive is located in the magnificent blufflands landscape of southeastern Minnesota. The beauty of the surrounding landscape is the primary reason the Apple Blossom Drive was originally designated as an official Scenic Byway in the State of Minnesota. The fact that the area is packed with apple orchards is the other reason.
La Crescent's claim as the Apple Capital of Minnesota has its roots in the first orchard planted here in the 1850's. Now, numerous orchards spread out over the bluffs that sit above the Mississippi River here. During early May, this drive features the sight and aroma of thousands of apple blossoms. From late summer through fall, apple stands appear in town and at roadside orchards. Apple Blossom Scenic Drive is a loop off of Great River Road (Highway 61), easily accessible from the Great River Bluffs State Park or from the city of La Crescent.
To get there from La Crescent: Get on Elm Street and head north out of town. Follow the "apple signs" to Elm Street, the main thoroughfare through town. As you climb a steep ascent and take several sharp turns in the road, you will find yourself on the top of the bluffs near pull-offs that offer some of the most magnificent vistas in our region. No matter the season, the scenic beauty of the La Crescent area is unsurpassed. Apple Blossom Drive features outstanding views of the Mississippi River and Lake Onalaska below. Continuing north on Apple Blossom, you will reach Winona County 12. If you make a right turn, you will travel a sharply twisting and steep descent into the riverside town of Dakota, Minnesota. If you choose to turn left, you will approach a small town called Nodine, which is just a few short miles from the entrance to the Great River Bluffs State Park near Interstate 90 exit 266.
